Monday Cinema: Once (15)
John Carney 2006 85 mins
7.30 p.m. £4.50 / £3.50
Real-life musicians Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová star in this winning tale of a folky romance set in Dublin. “It's easy to see why John Carney's Once became the darling of audiences and critics alike at this year's Sundance Film Festival. Compared to Park City's usual line-up of angst-ridden melodramas (and) star-powered "indies" … this sweet, simple Irish musical must have seemed like a work of sheer genius. Once may not boast stellar production values or elaborate dance numbers, but in its own scruffy way it captures the spirit of the genre better than any recent Hollywood musical.”( Ethan Alter, Premiere)
Wednesday 9th – Thursday 10th July • Hall
WBS SummerDance 2008
7.30 p.m. £4.50/£3.50
Our annual celebration of the many levels and styles of dance taught and developed at William Brookes. From A Level students who will be presenting their own choreography, to GCSE work and dance club presentations from students of all ages, these two evenings are a wonderful showcase of the dance work which has been created this year. As this event is sure to sell-out, please book early to avoid disappointment.
§ Monday 14th July • Auditorium
Monday Cinema:
The Darjeeling Ltd. (15)
Wes Anderson 2007 91 mins
7.30 p.m. £4.50 / £3.50
Wes Anderson (Rushmore, The Royal Tennenbaums, The Life Aquatic) directs Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray. Anderson’s gorgeous film is set in India, but this is a country represented idiosyncratically, filtered through Anderson’s sensibility, rather than a realist portrait. Three semi-estranged brothers set out on a trip together in the aftermath of their father’s death. Part of their journey involves finding their mother, Anjelica Huston, ensconced in a convent, (clearly modeled on that in Black Narcissus). “This shaggy-dog road trip, in which three brothers travel by rail across India, is unstintingly fussy, vain and self-regarding. But it is also a treasure: an odd, flawed, but nonetheless beautifully handmade object as apt to win affection as to provoke annoyance.” (New York Times)
Wednesday 16th – Thursday 17th July
To be performed in the open air at:

WBS Year 11 Drama
8.30 p.m. £4.50 / £3.50
This year’s outgoing Year 11 perform David Calcutt’s drama in an outdoor setting.
