Romeo+JulietMuch Wenlock Festival§ Monday 7th June • Auditorium
Monday Cinema: Romeo+Juliet (12A)
Baz Luhrmann 1996 120 mins
7.30 p.m. £5/£4
This year, the play at the centre of the Much Wenlock Festival is Romeo and Juliet, so during the Festival period, we are presenting two films that have adapted the story in very different ways. Here, Baz Luhrman’s first film in the U.S. after the massive success of the kitschy Strictly Ballroom, moves the action to the affluent Verona Beach. Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio are the lovers speaking Shakespeare’s words in a contemporary setting. “
Luhrmann's flamboyant direction pumps new life into a well-known, much-adapted tale. With the Oscar nominated 'pop-promo' design of the film, Shakespeare became fashionable and cool once again.” bbc.co.uk

Departures§ Monday 14th June • Auditorium
Monday Cinema: Departures (12A)
Yôjirô Takita 2008 130 mins
7.30 p.m. £5/£4
A redundant cellist (Masahiro Motoki) returns to his hometown to find employment and accepts a job in “departures”. Rather than working at a travel agency, as he believes, he finds his new work is with an undertaker. The film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film in 2009, beating out The Class and Waltz with Bashir. “The film is sometimes humorous, but not in a way to break the mood. The plot involves some developments we can see coming, but they seem natural, inevitable. The music is lush and sentimental in a subdued way, the cinematography is perfectly framed and evocative, and the movie is uncommonly absorbing.” Roger Ebert.

Michael Hoffman 2009 112 mins
7.30 p.m. £5/£4
Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer and James McAvoy star in Michael Hoffman’s drama about the last days of Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy. McAvoy plays Tolstoy’s secretary Valentin, a young man who finds himself caught in the middle of a power struggle between Tolstoy's wife, (Mirren), and Chertkov (Paul Giamatti), the leader of the utopian movement that Tolstoy founded. “Valentin is startled by the tempestuous nature of the Tolstoys' 48-year marriage, and he finds his loyalties tested more than once as he tries to navigate the passions -- financial as well as emotional -- that swirl around Tolstoy. The Last Station will be remembered as one of the most riveting cinematic portraits of what George Eliot called the "murder" of marriage.” The Hollywood Reporter.
