AFHJon Cruttenden
Number 9
57 cm x 47 cm Photograph • Value at purchase £55

“To me a good landscape photograph is one that makes you want to climb in and walk through it. I strive for simple, uncluttered compositions. The sky is also important for me. It can make the difference between an average and a great picture. A great cloudscape can help make a great picture. Most of my digital pictures start out in colour, some are taken with the specific intention of converting to mono in Photoshop. Many of my favourite photographs have been de-saturated, dodged and burned to bring out detail and contrast, otherwise lost. I try to avoid over-manipulating images. If you can tell it's been fiddled with, then you've gone too far.”

This piece formed part of Jon Cruttenden’s exhibition, Photography, which took place at The Edge Arts Centre in 2006.

AFHJulian Evans
Corvedale Sky
62 cm x 87 cm Photograph • Value at purchase £50

Julian attended Shrewsbury School of Art from 1973-1975 and gained a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design in Coventry in 1978. Julian has lived in Shropshire for most of his life and loves the varied landscapes that it has to offer.
“...rather than just take a picture of something, I try to provide a different view of what is in front of me. People tend to be marginalised, nature takes over and then composition becomes the most important factor”.

This piece formed part of the Images from the Landscape exhibition, which took place at The Edge Arts Centre in 2005.

AFHLuby Evans
Callow Song
32 cm x 41 cm Oil on canvas • Value at purchase unknown

“The moon orchids are secrets of the night, flowers of the imagination and symbols of a spiritual and physical relationship with a remarkable place. These paintings are inspired by nature, the landscapes and people of Wenlock. They are produced by an organic creativity for the world as we live it. Each painting evolves from a blank space, thoughts, a mass of ideas and experiences, tools, equipment, paint, ink – stuff which comes together in the process of creativity. Making marks on that blank space involves a conversation.”

This piece formed part of Luby Evans’ exhibition, Paintings for the Moon Orchids, which took place at The Edge Arts Centre in 2004.

The film was made entirely digitally using a computer and a graphics tablet so that I could ‘draw’ directly onto the screen. The programmes used were Painter 7, After Effects 5.5 and Premiere 6.”

AFHHugh Sanders
Underground Garages
Archival inkjet print on foamex 84 cm x 52 cm • Value at purchase £150

“Cinema and photographic reproduction have the ability to simulate a convincing version of any particular reality. With increased speed and the intensification of technological image reproduction, it is possible to have an appearance without any corresponding actuality. It has been argued by French theorist Jean Baudrillard, that our experience of reality is mediated by images: that we have difficulty actually distinguishing what is fixed and real and what is fleeting and simulated. My work takes as its inspiration this state of uncertainty; these works seem to quote cinema and television. I use plastic, card and wood to create models, which are then lit using torches and lamps, photographed and then digitally scanned and printed.”

This piece formed part of Hugh Sanders’ exhibition, Uncertainty, which took take place at The Edge Arts Centre in 2006.

AFHBetsy Smith
Overland
Watercolour 84 cm x 104 cm • Value at purchase £400

“I have been painting professionally now for eleven of the seventeen years I have spent in Shropshire. Captivated by the landscape, both locally and on the borders with Wales, I return to it as an ever-changing and challenging subject. Watercolour is my preferred medium, its fluidity and freshness relate closely to my response to what I see. My latest work, however, is seeking to surround the onlooker with the experience of landscape rather than an observed realised view, allowing for a more personal response, to stir the memory of walks, glimpses of landscape from a car journey, as the seasons pass.”

This piece formed part of Betsy Smith’s exhibition, New Work, New Directions, which took take place at The Edge Arts Centre in 2005.
