Asaf Sirkis Trio
8.00 p.m. £10/ £8
Asaf Sirkis drums
Tassos Spiliotopoulos guitar
Yaron Stavi bass
Drummer Asaf Sirkis impressed all who heard him at last year’s performance at The Edge by Tim Garland’s Lighthouse Trio. This evening he is fronting up his own trio with Tassos Spiliotopoulos and Yaron Stavi. The trio released their debut CD The Monk last year. Asaf has also played and recorded with Gilad Atzmon and the Orient House Ensemble and with The Inner Noise. Asaf’s playing and compositions reflect his Middle Eastern and North African influences as well as a healthy dose of 70s fusion.
“Devastatingly creative” John Fordham, The Guardian 2008
“Sirkis is not only an inventive drummer but also a composer of rigour, wit and surprising delicacy” Chris Ingham, Mojo Magazine, October 2008. www.asafsirkis.co.uk

Gilad Atzmon & The Orient House Ensemble
8.00 p.m. £10/ £8
Gilad Atzmon saxes
Eddie Hick drums
Yaron Stavi bass
Frank Harrison piano
Saxophonist Gilad Atzmon mixes his euphoric contemporary jazz with moments of brooding melodic reflection. Over the years his music has moved more and more towards a cultural hybrid. As a bandleader and reed player he has been amazing his listeners with his powerful personal style that combines great bebop artistry and Middle-Eastern roots in a sophisticated, sometimes ironical manner. Influenced by Coltrane’s powerful approach on the sax, the Orient House Ensemble’s performances are a tour de force of power and creativity. "Gilad Atzmon, the expat Israeli saxophonist/clarinettist, combines thrilling jazz musicianship with a maverick political intelligence." (The Guardian)

This is Gwilym’s third visit to The Edge – he has previously appeared with an earlier trio, and with Tim Garland’s Lighthouse Trio. At just 28 years old, Gwilym has been described as one of the most gifted pianists and imaginative composers on the British scene. Able to move effortlessly between jazz and classical music he can, at times, inhabit both worlds and has been described as stylistically reminiscent of Keith Jarrett. This trio features Russian bass player Yuri Goloubev, himself with a classical background, and gifted young drummer James Maddren.

Jazz Notes at the Edge
Phronesis
8.00 p.m. £10/ £8
Jasper Høiby bass
Ivo Neame piano
Mark Guiliana drums
Phronesis was created by Copenhagen-born/London-based bassist Jasper Høiby in Denmark in autumn 2005. The debut album, Organic Warfare, was released in November 2007, and the highly-acclaimed follow-up, Green Delay, in June 2009. Phronesis features pianist Ivo Neame and US drummer Mark Guiliana. Neame and Hoiby appeared at The Edge in 2009 in Neame’s trio. “Høiby’s full-bodied double bass playing … the bass sounds rich in both melody and sensuous, dancey rhythms on some very fine original themes inspired by Mediterranean, Latin and East European folk music. It’s also the best and most comfortable I’ve heard the Chick Corea/Jarrett-influenced pianist Ivo Neame play… riding on the groove power of bass and drums without sacrificing the underlying melancholy in the themes. Fans of Avishai Cohen or EST would do well to check this one out.” Jazzwise. www.jasperhoiby.com
